The Baroque style of the city of Ragusa...
Ragusa is a Baroque city, recently recognized by the Unesco Patrimony of the humanity. And' uniform in two parts, superior Ragusa and Ragusa Ibla. Superior Ragusa is built on a spur of rock surrounded from ample valleys; Ragusa Ibla, reconstructed after the sisma on the rests of the preceding medieval city you/he/she has abandoned on a hill a lot of scenografica. One of the principal characteristics of the city are the three tiled bridges that overcome the green valley S. Domenica. The Cathedral of S. Giovanni, whose jobs of construction began in 1694 (to one year from the earthquake and that they lasted around eighty years), it constitutes the heart of the Baroque part of the city together with the Church of St. George that is found to Ragusa Ibla. Very interesting I am also the Church of the College of Maria Addolorata, in S. Giovanni plaza, the old bridge or of the Cappuccinis dated 1835, Building Zacco, all angle of the street S. Vito with C/so V. Veneto, whose balconies have carved shelves raffiguranti turns grotesque, Building Bestini, along the C/so Italia, known for the graven mascheronis on the windows. From superior Ragusa it is possible to go down to Ragusa Ibla (the low part of the city) through picturesque ramps of staircases that begin from the Church of S. Maria of the Staircases that all expresses, of the primitive Norman construction (antecedent to the earthquake) preserve a portal and a pulpit to the feet of the bell tower. To Ragusa Ibla you can visit the church of S. Maria dell, this Church, built in 1639, it belonged to the powerful order of the Riders of Malta whose coat of arms is graven on the principal portal. L ' interns the altars it is pompous they have different decorations of white color. Very important it is the Building Casentini that is a typical example of the Baroque Sicilian with you protected, Corinthian capitals and festoons, of great artistic value they are the shelves of the balconies that represent various scenes of the life of every day as that of the “vagabond” or “dell inn”, alternate to monstrous mascheroni. In the plaza “of the D'Arco” the church of the Purgatory rises whose façade is built in top to a stairway contained by artistic railing. Notable all I intern, a cloth that represents the “Souls of the Purgatory.” Its façade is embellished from Corinthian capitals and from graven balconies. This part is perhaps the more characteristic of Ibla with silent lanes, stairways, arcs and narrow passages. The street of the Market that coasts along a picturesque valley, brings thin in Cathedral plaza, dominated from the church of S. Giorgio among the most beautiful of the Baroque one, not only ibleo. The Cathedral whose construction was initiated in 1739, on sketch of Rosary Strong, he/she offers an unbelievable effect scenografico since it rises in top to a steep stairway; the façade is in three convex orders to the center with columns and statues to the sides, the bell cell you/he/she is surmounted aloft by a cuspide and by the cross. The dome is neoclassic, tall over 40 meters and it leans on 16 columns. The stairway is surrounded by a ferriata of big artistic level. The portals are elegantly decorated, the inside is to three aisles with columns and capitals Corinthian. The side chapels are decorated with valuable cloths what “the immaculate one”, “the guardian angel”, “St. George” and “the Rest in Egypt.” This last work is of the Guerci. The apse has a vast glass door istoriata that represents the “Martyrs of S. Giorgio”, a great sculpture of S.Giorgio with other Saints is found in the sacristy, the treasure is composed from necklaces in gold and in silver, sacred parameters and from a reliquario in silver known as “You S. Cassa.” The plaza of the Cathedral is surrounded from buildings mole-classical and Baroque it finishes with a fountain and the Circle of conversation whose saloon has the painted ceiling. Among the most important buildings, you can admire that some family you Fortress, behind the Cathedral, with six balconies from the graven shelves; angels have imagined, cupids, a woman with child, a performer of mandola and the caricatures of some local noble of the time.
